Sampson offeres relief in 8-0 shutout loss (AFL Recap 11/12)

recap-11-12-aflSCOTTSDALE, AZ – With just two games remaining in the AFL season, the Scottsdale Scorpions (11-20) again stumbled and further extended their tough skid with Wednesday’s 8-0 shutout to the Surprise Saguaros (16-14) at Scottsdale Stadium. The Scorpions have dropped four straight games and 10 of their last 11 since Oct. 31.

Kyle Higashioka (NYY) and Aaron Judge (NYY) each doubled for the Scorpions lone hits of the game. Josh Bell (PIT), Dan Gamache (PIT), Higashioka and L.J. Mazzilli (NYM) also coaxed a walk to give the Scorpions just six total baserunners that reached safely.

Opposing starter Keith Couch (BOS) earned the win with four innings of one-hit ball. He struck out three and walked two to pick up his league high-tying third victory of the season.

His counterpart, Tyler Glasnow (PIT), was not nearly as strong en route to his second straight loss. Glasgow gave up both his runs when Patrick Kivlehan (SEA) singled to cash in a Saguaros double steal in the first frame. Glasgow lasted one more inning, whiffing and walking two to conclude his AFL stint ranked first in strikeouts-per-nine (9.31) and tied for fourth in total walks (12).

Angel Sanchez followed his fellow Bucco prospect in the third and was charged with his first earned runs in eight AFL appearances. The reliever had previously worked 10 consecutive innings without an earned tally prior to his three runs in two innings on Wednesday.

Tribe starter Adrian Sampson chipped in with a scoreless fifth, capping his season with a 2.25 ERA (3 ER/12.0 IP) over 10 games.
