Bucco prospects shine in dreary weekend sweep (AFL Recap 10/17-19)

recap-afl-weekend-17-181SURPRISE, AZ – Pirates prospects Josh Bell (2H, RBI), Elias Diaz (2H, 2RBI) and Dan Gamache (1H, R) combined for five hits, one run and three RBI in a loss on Friday, Tyler Glasnow (3.0IP), Angel Sanchez (2.0IP) and Adrian Sampson (1.0IP) tossed six consecutive scoreless innings in Saturday’s defeat and the Scottsdale Scorpions suffered an 0-2 sweep during their weekend series with Glendale (4-4) and Peoria (3-6).

The Scorpions erased a five-run deficit on Friday before ultimately seeing their rally fall 180 feet short in the bottom of the ninth.

Brandon Nimmo (NYM) put the Scorpions on the board in the third with an RBI single and Diaz chipped further away by doubling home a two-out walk in Gamache to cut the deficit to 5-2 through four frames.

After Glendale plated what proved to be the game-winner in the sixth, Diaz and Bell sparked a three-run rally with a pair of RBI singles in the eighth and the ninth. Gamache then whiffed with two outs to strand the tying run in scoring position.

On Saturday, starter Glasnow anchored the three-man shutout effort by punching out three over three scoreless innings. Sanchez blanked Peoria on one hit through the fourth and fifth, and after fellow Bucco farmhand Bell doubled and scored for run support, Sampson tossed a perfect sixth to preserve the 2-0 lead.

Peoria’s Kes Carter (TB) lifted a solo homer with two outs in the ninth to send the game to extras. Edward Salcedo (ATL) and Jordan Smith (CLE) knocked back-to-back doubles for the Javelinas’ 4-3, 11-inning walk.
