Bird powers, Rodriguez pitches Scottsdale to win (AFL Recap 10/20)

recap-10-20-afl1SCOTTSDALE, AZ – Pirates southpaw Joely Rodriguez struck out five in four scoreless innings, Josh Bell (PIT) knocked his league-leading fifth double and the Scottsdale Scorpions (6-6) cruised to a 7-3 victory over the Glendale Desert Dogs (5-5) on Monday night at Scottsdale Stadium.

Rodriguez scattered three singles and allowed just one batter to reach second base during Monday’s gem. He has now blanked opponents in each of his last two starts to improve to 2-0 with a seven-inning scoreless streak, beginning Oct. 14.

Overall, Rodriguez owns a stellar 0.96 ERA (1 ER/9.1 IP) with 10 strikeouts in three outings this fall.

Fellow Buccos prospects Bell, Elias Diaz and Dan Gamache, each added extra-base hits to help pace the victory, with bell doubling for an AFL-best fifth time in his last six games.

Greg Bird (NYY) homered in the second to extend his hitting streak to each of his nine contest. Diaz tripled in Scottsdale’s fifth run of the first four innings before Gamache plated Bell with an RBI double to make it 7-3 in the seventh.

Reliever Paul Sewald (NYM) struck out two and Dario Alvarez (NYM) whiffed one to pick up a hair of holds and give the Scorpions 12 total punchiest in the victory.
