Sampson nails down save after Bell caps comeback (AFL Recap 10/21)

recap-10-22-afl1GLENDALE, AZ – Pirates top prospect Josh Bell scored the tying run in the top of the eighth and 2014 Indians starter Adrian Sampson preserved the ninth-inning lead to complete the Scottsdale Scorpions’ (7-6) 7-6 come-from-behind victory over the Glendale Desert Dogs (6-7) on Tuesday at Camelback Ranch.

Kelby Tomlinson’s (SF) two-out double in the eighth plated Bell for the tying run and set in motion the game-winning tally in a play at the plate. As Dante Bichette Jr. (NYY) raced to the plate, Glendale’s late defensive replacement at catcher Mike Ohlman (BAL), dropped the throw at home to allow Scottsdale to take its first lead of the game, 7-6. Bell reached and scored after singling in the first tally of the frame.

Sampson faced four batters in the pivotal ninth, issuing a one-out walk around his flyout and grounder before whiffing Steven Moya (DET) to nail down the save.

The Scorpions scored in the opening frame when Roman Quinn’s (PHI) leadoff walk came plate ward on an infield roller from Tyler Austin (NYY) to put the first dent in the scoreboard.

Glendale responded with two homers in a four-run second and a pair of additional scores in the fifth. Scottsdale chipped into the deficit on Austin’s RBI groundout in the sixth and Logan Moore’s (PHI) sac fly in the seventh.
