MESA, AZ – Pirates left Joely Rodriguez fired three shutout innings, Josh Bell (PIT) turned in his second straight multi-hit game and the Scottsdale Scorpions (5-2) outslugged the Mesa Solar Sox (1-5) 10-7 on Tuesday afternoon at Cubs Park.
Rodriguez continued his strong showing this fall by blanking Mesa with just one single, a lone walk and three strikeouts over his three-inning triumph. The Buccos southpaw has registered a 1.69 ERA (1 ER/5.1 IP) over two AFL starts, and is now the first Scottsdale starter to notch a victory in 2014.
Fellow Pirates farmhand Bell backed the gem by doubling and scoring the first of four Scorpions runs in the second inning. Pittsburgh infielder Dan Gamache also chipped in by following Roman Quinn’s (PHI) two-run single with a sac fly to cap the frame.
Daniel Carbonell (SF) homered with two outs in the third inning. Bell singled in the fourth off Blue Jays No. 2 prospect Roberto Osuna and Matt Reynolds (NYM) plated Greg Bird (NYY) two batters later to widen the lead to 9-0. Bell had collected just one hit in his first nine at-bats from Oct. 7-9, but is 4-for-9 with two doubles, a run scored and two RBI in his previous two games.
Taking over in the seventh, Indianapolis Indians starter Adrian Sampson induced a double-play ball in his scoreless frame before yielding a two-run homer to Matt Olson (OAK) in the bottom of the eighth. Sampson rebounded to retire three of the next four batters and close out his appearance with two runs on hour hits over two innings of relief.
Scottsdale closer Nefi Ogando (PHI) inherited and escaped a one-out, bases-loaded ninth to leave the tying run at first base.
