SURPRISE, AZ – Pirates righty Tyler Glasnow was strong in the early goings while fellow Buccos prospects Dan Gamache and Elias Diaz combined for each of the Scottsdale Scorpions (10-16) three runs, but the combined efforts weren’t enough in a 5-3 loss to the Peoria Javelinas (11-13) on Thursday afternoon at Surprise Stadium.
The defeat eliminates Scottsdale from the AFL Playoffs, which will culminate in a title game at the Scorpions’ home ballpark on Nov. 15.
Glasnow was near perfect through the first three frames, allowing only a one-out triple to Kes Carter (TB) over his first three scoreless innings. However, the starter ran into trouble in the fourth when a leadoff walk and RBI double paced the two-run inning. Glasnow ultimately avoided any further damage but came out on the wrong end of the decision with two runs on three hits and three strikeouts in four innings of action.
The Scorpions drew first blood in the second courtesy of Josh Bell (PIT), who drew a leadoff walk, swiped second, took third on an error and came plate ward on a sac fly by fellow Pirates farmhand Gamache.
Although Peoria put the game out of reach with a three-run sixth, Diaz attempted to ignite a Scottsdale rally with a triple to left that plated two and cut the deficit to 5-3.
Jamie Schultz (TB) earned the win with an unearned run in 4 2/3 innings and Sam Tuivailala (STL) picked up his fourth save for the Javelinas.
