Cougars withstand the cold, defeat USF 4-2

On a cold mid-week matchup the Spring Arbor University men’s soccer team faced off against the visiting University of Saint Francis (USF) Cougars. The Spring Arbor Cougars walked away victorious, outscoring USF 4-2.

Giovanni Sturla got the Cougars on the board first in just the 2-minute mark of the game. Sturla took a Patrick Rose service and scored his third goal of the season.

Just short of 20 minutes later, Brandon Bell would put the Cougars up 2-0 with his first goal of the year. Godwin Addai would get the assist on Bell’s goal.

Midway through the first half, Sturla and David Edwardson would work together and give Spring Arbor a commanding 3-0 when Sturla scored his second of the night and fourth of the season in the 27th minute.

In the high-scoring first half of the game, St. Francis would get on the board just before half when Alex Fletcher scoring an unassisted goal.

After the break, both teams came out with aggressive play, but it was St. Francis that struck first in the 61st minute. USF’s Jason Walcutt took a Mitchell Holloway pass and managed to get the shot past Cougar Keeper Billy Irvine to cut Spring Arbor’s lead to 3-2 and make things a little tense for the Cougar faithful.

Spring Arbor’s Edwardson would help release that tension with an unassisted goal for the Cougars just eight minutes later to give Spring Arbor a 4-2 lead which would wind up becoming the final score of the game.

The Cougars improved to 4-0-2 in League play and 11-2-2 overall while St. Francis fell to 1-4 in the CL and 7-7 overall. Spring Arbor will travel to Grace College for a 1:00 matchup on Oct. 13.
