SCOTTSDALE, AZ – Tyler Glasnow (PIT) tossed three scoreless innings and Josh Bell (PIT) went 2-for-4 with the game-winning RBI single as the pair of reigning Pirates Minor League Players of the Year powered the Scottsdale Scorpions (4-2) to a 2-1 victory over the Mesa Solar Sox (1-4) on Monday night at Scottsdale Stadium.
Glasnow, making his second AFL start, struck out three while allowing just two hits and a lone walk on 39 pitches over his three-inning outing. The top prospect yielded a leadoff double in the first before retiring each of his next seven batters and eight of his final 10 in the dominant effort.
His counter part, Felipe Rivero (WAS), was equally strong, facing the minimum through the first three frames until Roman Quinn (PHI) singled and scored to break the scoreless tie in the bottom of the fourth. Bell then delivered his two-out, game-winning knock just four batters later to score Kelby Tomlinson (SF) and give the Scorpions a 2-0 lead.
The Solar Sox pulled within one on a two-out RBI single by from Daniel Robertson in the top of the eighth. Chad Hinshaw (LAA) singled and swiped second to open the ninth, but with two outs in the frame, the tying run was left stranded as Scottsdale closer Steven Overt (SF) induced a game-ending groundout to escape the jam and pick up his first AFL save.
