In the first quarter of a Washington (Oklahoma) High School’s October 11 victory over Hinton (Oklahoma) High School, Brock Harmon returned three interceptions for touchdowns in six minutes and set a national record.
Harmon’s three returns were 31, 42, and 32 yards. Fifteen players from Michigan, Indiana, Iowa and Texas were tied for the record with two interception touchdown returns in a quarter.
In his record breaking performance, the senior played defensive back, but Harmon is listed on the Washington Warriors’ roster as the quarterback.
In an interview with Trent Shadid of “The Oklahoman,” Harmon said, “I couldn’t have done it without the guys blocking in front of me. My name goes in the record books, but it’s a team accomplishment.”
Harmon’s coach, Brad Beller also felt that even though it was Harmon that broke the record it was clear that it couldn’t have happened if it weren’t for the team.
“Also, not to brag or anything, but it shows people how good our secondary is. We think we’re one of the best in the state,” Harmon said.
Just before the start of the season, Harmon, who at the time had 4,000 all-purpose yards and was just about to start his third year as the starter, did another interview with Shadid.
In that interview, Harmon reveals the famous quarterback he’d most like to emulate is Johnny Manziel from Texas A&M University and he was excited to play Lindsay (Oklahoma) High School.
“Last year, it was a big game in Week 10 for the second spot in our district, and we came out and beat them,” said Harmon. “It was a great football game, probably the most fun I’ve had in a game in my life. But they’re going to be really good this year and so are we.”
Washington has a 6-1 record and will be playing Lindsay on Nov. 8, the last day of the regular season.
“We’re looking forward to possibly having that game as the district championship,” Harmon said.
