Last year, only three Major League Baseball pitchers threw a no-hitter. Since April 1, there have been four by high school pitchers.

Mike Delio, a junior at Carle Place (New York) High School, pitched a no-hitter on April Fool’s Day. This wasn’t your average no-hitter. It was Delio’s first ever varsity start and he struck out all 21 batters he faced, making a perfect game.

“Every time he takes the mound there is always the chance that he can do something special,” said Carle Place Coach Brian Krummenacker in a “Long Island Newsday” article.

On April 3 in a double header against Fair Oaks (California) Sacramento Waldorf, senior Robbie Miller and sophomore Brendan Rodegerts of Woodland Christian High School pitched back-to-back no-hitters.

Like Delio, this was Rodegerts first career varsity start after starting the season with the junior varsity team. Head Coach Jerry Miller told MaxPreps, “We brought him up to the varsity because we were short of some healthy throwing arms. It was pretty special.”

Three days later, on April 4, Santa Fe (California) Christian High School began league play with a game at the San Diego Padres’ Petco Park. While the venue is intimidating, senior Chase Bushor took the mound and pitched a no-hitter.

“I can’t really describe this moment at all,” Bushor told SDcoastalsports.com. “To come out and pitch at Petco Park and toss a no-hitter. I could never even dream of this.”
