SURPRISE, AZ – A late rally wasn’t quite enough to overcome Patrick Leonard’s (TB) pair of homers as the Scottsdale Scorpions (10-12) continued their recent skid with a 6-5 loss to the Peoria Javelinas (9-12) on Monday afternoon at Surprise Stadium.
The Scorpions have gone 5-11 after winning five of their first seven games to being the AFL campaign.
Leonard went deep with a pair of solo homers, taking Scorpions starter Adam Morgan (PHI) to left in the third and connecting against Scottsdale reliever Paul Sewald (NYM) in the fifth. The Peoria slugger finished the contest 3-for-4 with two runs, two homers and three RBI and is now 7-for-18 (.389) over his last five contests.
Scottsdale battled back with a Matt Reynolds (NYM) RBI liner in the fourth and two RBI groundouts in the fifth.
After Leonard homered for the second time, both bullpens swapped zeros until the Scorpions put the tying and go-ahead runs on base in the ninth.
Logan Moore (PHI) began the final-frame rally with a single into center. Roman Quinn (PHI) and Aaron Judge (NYY) coaxed a pair of walks to load the bases and set the stage for Greg Bird (NYY), who lifted a sac fly to left to cut the deficit to 6-4. Dan Bichette Jr. (NYY) then made it a one-run affair with an RBI single up the middle, but with two on and two out, a game-ending groundout halted the Scorpions’ comeback.
