The Indianapolis Indians picked up their sixth win of the season on Wednesday night against the Toledo Mud Hens.
It was a battle of the bats, as hitters from both teams combined for 20 hits and 14 runs in the Tribe’s 8-6 victory.
After getting a no-decision in the season-opener last week, Casey Sadler took the mound looking to win his first game of the season. He held the Mud Hens to only two runs on five hits in his seven-inning outing.
The Tribe took to scoring first, scoring a run in both the second and third innings. Chris McGuiness drove in the first run, when he grounded into a double play with the bases loaded. In the next frame, Chris Dickerson hit his first home run of the season.
The Mud Hens answered both those runs, scoring a run in the bottom of the third and fourth innings.
The game broke open in the later innings. The first Indians’ score of a five run, two-inning stretch came whenMatt Hague reached first on an error with the bases loaded in the sixth. They scored two more runs on a sacrifice fly by Carlos Paulino and a single by Dickerson that inning.
In the seventh, Andrew Lambo drove in Gregory Polanco with a double and Lambo came around to score later in the inning.
The Mud Hens answered with a run in the eighth and the Indians responded by scoring a run in the top of the ninth on a sacrifice fly by McGuiness.
With a 8-3 lead heading into the bottom of the ninth, the Tribe’s bullpen struggled, as Andy Oliver and Jared Hughes combined to walk two, give up two hits and three runs.
Starting Thursday, the Tribe is on a six-game home-stand starting with Opening Night against the Mud Hens. Game-time is 7:05 p.m. with Brandon Cumpton scheduled to start.
