MESA, AZ – Aaron Judge (NYY) homered twice, Pirates top pitching prospect Tyler Glasnow earned his first AFL win and the Scottsdale Scorpions (10-11) downed the Mesa Solar Sox (10-9) 7-5 on Thursday night at Cubs Park.
Glasnow departed as the beneficiary of each of Scottsdale’s seven scores after working 3 2/3 innings with three runs and five hits (all singles). The right-hander struck out two in his first AFL win, giving him a team-high 15 whiffs in 13 1/3 frames on the year.
Glasnow also teamed up with batterymate and Pirates prospect Elias Diaz for an inning-ending double play in the third. After Glasnow induced a fly out to left, Diaz applied the tag at the plate on a Mesa runner attempting to score.
Judge’s two run homer in the first knocked Solar Sox starter Felipe Rivero (WAS) out of the game with 31 pitches and just two outs.
Roman Quinn (PHI) tripled in two more runs, including a one-out in Diaz, to put the Scorpions up 4-1 in the fourth. Judge homered again two batters later to finish the effort at 2-for-4 with two runs and four RBI.
Once Glasnow exited in the fourth, the Scottsdale bullpen combined for two runs on six hits, including a run given up by Nefi Ogando (PHI) before he closed out the game with back-to-back grounders for his league-leading third save.
