Florida’s Schooling masters the 100-yard butterfly with a new national record

On November 8, Joseph Schooling of Jacksonville (Florida) Bolles School broke the record in the 100-yard Butterfly at the Florida High School Athletic Association State meet.

The previous record set by Schooling in 2012, was 46.90, but the time was lowered to 45.89 during the season by Caeleb Dressel of Clay High School at midseason meet on September 28.

Schooling then lowered the record again with a time of 45.52, four seconds ahead of the second place swimmer. According to an article on SwimSwam.com, Schooling’s time would have placed fifth at the National Collegiate Athletic Association Championships last year.

Originally from Singapore, Schooling was granted deferment for his National Service obligation, which allows him to focus on his training for the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janero, Brazil.

Schooling committed to the University of Texas at Austin and will be coached by Eddie Reese. Reese was the coach of the United States 2008 Olympic swim team. The opportunity to be mentored by Reese, according to Singaporean press source “The Strait Times,” was a major factor in the decision to grant his deferment.
