With the high school football season barely underway, two quarterbacks have already had record performing games.
Shuler Bentley, a senior quarterback at Duncan (South Carolina) Byrnes High School, outshined Peyton Manning’s impressive seven touchdown pass opening night for the Denver Broncos when he threw for nine touchdowns. He would run for another touchdown as Byrnes cruised to an 82-49 victory.
Bentley’s performance is tied for eighth in the National High School Sports Record Book. The most touchdown passes thrown in a game belongs to Arthur Smith, who threw for 15 touchdowns in 1921. Former Byrnes quarterback Anthony Johnson and Myrtle Beach quarterback JD Melton held the state record of eight touchdowns thrown in a game.
Normally the team with a quarterback that throws for 600 yards is victorious, but that wasn’t the case for Salado (Texas) High School. Quarterback McLane Carter threw for 613 yards and eight touchdowns, but it wasn’t enough as Salado lost 75-67 to Lorena (Texas) High School.
His performance ranks fourth in Texas high school history. In the NFHS Record Book, his 613-yard performance ties him with Conner Manning of Lake Forest (California) El Toro High School at 17th.
