Two girls basketball teams combine for 100 free throws

Until January, it had been 14 years since two teams combined for 100 free throws. That changed when the Brunswick (Georgia) Lady Pirates defeated the Tifton (Georgia) Tift County Lady Devils 79-67.

According to the NFHS Record Book, the combined total ties for third most free throws attempted in a girls basketball game. Waltonville (Illinois) High School and Elkville (Illinois) Elverado High School combined for 100 free throws in 1989 and Minnesota’s LeRoy-Ostrander High School and Rushford (Minnesota) Peterson High School accomplished the feat in 1997.

The record belongs to Wolfe City (Texas) High School and Whitewright (Texas) High School, who combined for 114 free throws attempted.

According to the “Tifton Gazette,” the 100th shot came with 14.7 seconds left when Brunswick’s Brea Thomas made one of two free throws. By the second half, almost every player was in foul trouble with both teams having several players with four fouls in the third quarter
