The Indianapolis Indians opened their six-game home stand with not one – but two – extra inning performances against the Louisville Bats. Unfortunately, both games on Sunday afternoon and Monday night had similar results, with the Tribe losing 5-4 and 7-2, respectively.
On Sunday, Casey Sadler was looking for a better start than his last, which was his shortest start of the season at only one inning. He lasted 5.2 innings giving up four runs on 10 hits.
Not only that, all of the position players on the Indians’ roster made an appearance in the game either as pinch hitters or replacements in the later innings of the game. This is because this series against the Bats has no designated hitter and the pitchers are batting.
Adam Wilk made a long relief appearance – pitching four innings – but gave up the winning run in the 12th for his 14th loss of the season.
The Tribe had a 3-1 lead, but lost it in the sixth when Sadler gave up three runs. The Indians’ offense battled back and scored the tying run with two outs in the bottom of the ninth.
For the last dollar menu Monday of the season, the Tribe’s offense was all thanks to Andrew Lambo, who had two home runs. The first came in the first inning of the game and the second was in the sixth inning.
The Bats scored two runs off Tribe starter Nick Kingham, who pitched eight innings and only gave up four hits.
It was in the eleventh inning that the Bats took the lead and lit up reliever Andy Oliver for five runs (one earned) in his only inning of work. The Tribe was unable to bounce back in the bottom of the eleventh and even with a runner in scoring position, they failed to capitalize on the opportunity as they faced a position player pitching.
