RECENT RESULTS: The Tigers snapped a two-game losing streak with a 2-1 win in 10 innings vs. the Twins on Tuesday night at Comerica Park. With the game tied at one in the 10th, Anthony Gose hit a one-out double and Ian Kinsler followed with a game-winning single. Gose and Kinsler each had two hits in the win, while Yoenis Cespedes also added a pair of hits. J.D. Martinez hit his seventh home run of the season. Angel Nesbitt pitched a scoreless 10th inning to earn the first win of his major league career. Alfredo Simon started for Detroit and threw 7.2 innings, giving up one run on six hits with one walk and six strikeouts. The Tigers and Twins play game two of their three-game series tonight. Following the series vs. Minnesota, Detroit embarks on a brief three-game road trip to face the St. Louis Cardinals.
KINSLER WITH THE WALKOFF WINNER: Ian Kinsler delivered the walkoff hit on Tuesday night, hitting a single to drive in Anthony Gose. The walkoff hit for Kinsler was the fifth of his career and his second of the season. Kinsler also had a walkoff hit in the victory on May 8 vs. Kansas City.
SIMON SAYS: Alfredo Simon turned in his fourth quality start of the season last night vs. Minnesota, allowing one run on six hits with one walk and six strikeouts in 7.2 innings. Simon has allowed just one earned run in each of his three starts this season at Comerica Park. In three home starts, Simon has a 2-0 record with a 1.25 ERA (21.2IP/3ER) and 16 strikeouts.
NESBITT EARNS FIRST MAJOR LEAGUE WIN: Angel Nesbitt picked up the first win of his major league career last night vs. Minnesota. Nesbitt worked a scoreless 10th inning, allowing one hit and striking out one.
J.D. POWER: J.D. Martinez belted his seventh home run of the season in Tuesday’s win. The home run for Martinez was his first since April 29 at Minnesota. Of his seven home runs this season, four have come against the Twins. Martinez’s seven home runs ranks tied for ninth in the American League.
EXTRA, EXTRA: After not playing an extra-inning game in the first 31 games of the season, the Tigers have gone to extras in each of the last two games. It marks the first time Detroit has played back-to-back extra-inning games since August 9-10, 2014 at Toronto.
KINSLER, VMART ON TARGET VS. NOLASCO: Ian Kinsler and Victor Martinez have each had success against tonight’s Twins starter, Ricky Nolasco. Kinsler is hitting .429 (6×14) with three doubles and four RBI vs. Nolasco, while Martinez has a .625 (5×8) batting average with a double and a RBI.
