RECENT RESULTS: The Tigers evened their series against the Indians with a 6-0 win on Saturday night at Comerica Park. Three Tigers pitchers combined on a three-hit shutout, led by starter Alfredo Simon, who tossed 7.0 shutout innings with two hits allowed, four walks and five strikeouts. Offensively, J.D. Martinez hit a two-run home run, his 35th of the season, while Tyler Collins blasted a solo homer, his third of the year. Ian Kinsler and James McCann each added two hits and a RBI in the victory. The Tigers and Indians conclude their three-game series this afternoon. Following today’s game, the homestand continues with three games vs. Tampa Bay (September 7-9).
J.D. POWER: J.D. Martinez hit his 35th home run of the season last night, blasting a two-run shot off Danny Salazar in the third inning. Martinez’s 35 home runs are a single-season career high and are tied for the fourth most in the American League. Martinez is the 10th player in franchise history to hit 35-or-more home runs in a season, joining Miguel Cabrera (2008, 2010, 2012, 2013), Norm Cash (1961, 1962), Rocky Colavito (1960, 1961, 1962), Darrell Evans (1985), Cecil Fielder (1990, 1991, 1992), Hank Greenberg (1935, 1937, 1938, 1940, 1946), Willie Horton (1968), Dean Palmer (1999) and Rudy York (1937).
KINSLER PILING UP THE MULTI-HIT GAMES: Ian Kinsler went 2×4 with a RBI in last night’s game to record his major league leading 53rd multi-hit game of the season. Kinsler has recorded two-or-more hits in 17 of his last 33 games and is batting .381 (51×134) with 27 runs scored, nine doubles, three triples, five home runs and 22 RBI during the 33-game stretch.
SIMON CONTINUES SUCCESS VS. INDIANS: Alfredo Simon earned his 12th win of the season last night, throwing 7.0 shutout innings with two hits allowed, four walks and five strikeouts. The performance continued Simon’s success this season against Cleveland. In four starts vs. the Indians in 2015, Simon has posted a 4-0 record with a 1.50 ERA (24.0IP/4ER) and 16 strikeouts.
MIGGY, VMART ON THE MARK VS. THE INDIANS: Miguel Cabrera and Victor Martinez have each put up impressive numbers in their career against the Indians. Cabrera is hitting .363 (200×551) with 108 runs scored, 32 doubles, 40 home runs and 129 RBI in 143 games vs. the Indians, while Martinez is batting .343 (97×283) with 49 runs scored, 25 doubles, 12 home runs and 63 RBI in 76 games vs. Cleveland. Cabrera has continued his success vs. the Indians this season, hitting .551 (27×49) with 13 runs scored, two doubles, five home runs and 17 RBI. Cabrera leads all active players with 40 home runs and 129 RBI vs. the Indians, while he is second with a .363 batting average, a .436 on-base percentage and a .639 slugging percentage. Martinez ranks third among active players with a .558 slugging percentage, while he is fourth with a .343 batting average and fifth with a .412 on-base percentage.
