Without Vance Worley, the Indianapolis Indians may have lost their fourth straight game and their second to the Lehigh Valley IronPigs on this road trip. Instead, the Tribe won 4-2 as Worley dominated at the plate and on the mound.

Since joining the Indians, Worley’s stats speak for themselves. In seven starts for the Tribe, he has a 3-2 record with 23 runs (22 earned) scored on 47 hits in 46 innings pitched. He’s struck out 43 batters and walked four.

On Sunday his final line looked like this:

This was his second outing that lasted eight innings. He did so on May 28 when the Tribe was hosting the Buffalo Bisons. Even though his ERA is slightly elevated, that comes from two outings when he gave up six earned runs.

The two runs that Worley gave up came on a two-run home run in the seventh inning by the IronPigs’ catcher Koyie Hill.

His performance didn’t end there. In the third inning, Worley put the Indians on the board with a solo home run. He went 3-for-3 with two RBIs.

The Tribe scored three more runs, two that came in the fourth before adding a final insurance run in the ninth. In the fourth inning  Robert Andino sacrificed in a run before Worley hit an RBI single. The Tribe’s last run came when Michael Martinez hit into a double-play after Chase d’Arnaud doubled and Gregory Polanco singled to start the inning.

Andy Oliver earned his fourth save of the season tying teammates Josh Kinney and Jared Hughes as the Indians’ saves leaders. Hughes started the season with the Tribe before being called up to Pittsburgh in late April/early May.

The Tribe has two more games against the IronPigs before they return home for a eight-game home stand against the Durham Bulls and the Gwinnett Braves. Monday night’s game against Lehigh Valley is scheduled to start at 7:05 p.m. with Jay Jackson the Tribe’s expected pitcher.
