RECENT RESULTS: The Tigers lost their fourth straight game with a 13-1 setback against Cleveland on Friday night at Comerica Park. Ian Kinsler reached base in all four plate appearances, going 2×2 and drawing two walks. Nick Castellanos accounted for the only run of the night for Detroit, hitting his second home run of the season. Shane Greene started for the Tigers and suffered his first loss of the season, allowing eight runs on nine hits with two walks and one strikeout in 4.0 innings. The Tigers and Indians play game two of their three-game weekend series this afternoon. Following this weekend’s series the Tigers begin a 10-game road trip that will take them to Minnesota for three games (April 27-29), Kansas City for four games (April 30- May 3) and Chicago for three games (May 5-7).
KINSLER PILING UP THE MULTI-HIT GAMES: Ian Kinsler reached base in all four plate appearances last night, going 2×2 with a pair of walks. Kinsler’s two hits marked his seventh multi-hit game this season, which ranks tied for fourth in the American League. Kinsler also ranks tied for eighth in the AL with 12 runs scored.
WILSON MAKES TIGERS DEBUT: Alex Wilson made his Tigers debut in last night’s game, entering in the fourth inning out of the bullpen. In 3.0 innings of work, Wilson allowed one run on two hits with one strikeout.
J.D. ON TARGET VS. BAUER: J.D. Martinez enters this afternoon’s game hitting .455 (5×11) with a home run and two RBI in his career against Trevor Bauer. Among active players with at least 10 at bats vs. Bauer, Martinez’s .455 batting average ranks third.
13TH ANNUAL NEGRO LEAGUES WEEKEND
Q&A: As part of the Negro Leagues Weekend events, the Tigers are hosting select former Negro Leagues players for a question and answer session prior to the game in the Big Cat Court at 11:45 a.m.
COMERICA BANK CEREMONY: Comerica Bank will host a special ceremony, prior to today’s contest, to pay tribute to the Bing Youth Institutes’ BINGO mentoring program. Former Mayor Dave Bing, representatives from Comerica Bank and mentors and mentees from the Institutes’ BINGO program will participate in the ceremony.
NEGRO LEAGUES TRIBUTE CEREMONY: Eight former Negro League players and one former Negro League team owner will be recognized during a special pre-game, on-field ceremony. Members include: Melvin Duncan, Eugene Scruggs, Bill Hill, Charlie Davis, Walt Owens, Pedro Sierra, Ron Teasley and Jake Sanders.
21ST ANNUAL NEGRO LEAGUES TRIBUTE GAME: During today’s contest, the Tigers will don the throwback uniforms of the Detroit Stars and the Indians will suit up as the Cleveland Buckeyes.
TODAY’S TIDBITS
- The ceremonial first pitches will be thrown out by Charise Key, a representative of Comerica Bank and former Negro Leagues player Melvin Duncan.
- The national anthem will be performed by the Achievers Ladies Ensemble from the Detroit School of the Arts.
- The game ball will be delivered by Staff Sergeant Joshua Hoppenworth of the United States Air Force.
- The first 10,000 fans to enter the park will receive a Detroit Stars Scarf, courtesy of Comerica Bank.
