Molly Mortensen carries on family tradition of kickers at Washington high school

In the past 10 football season, there have only been two when a Mortensen wasn’t the kicker for the Tacoma (Washington) Franklin Pierce High School football team.

It started with Dirk Mortensen who was the varsity kicker from 2004-2007. He also played on the defensive line because of his 6-foot-3, 235 pound frame. It was his kicking though that earned his selection to the all-South Puget Sound League 3A team twice.

In an interview with “The News Tribune” Dirk said, “I knew my sister always enjoyed watching me, but following suit was definitely a surprise. I think she wanted to stir the pot a little bit.” His sister Celina quit the girls’ soccer team to join the football team in 2008. She is YouTube famous for a tackle she made on a kick return.

Megan followed and kicked for Franklin Pierce from 2011-2012. She is the career leader in points after touchdowns (PAT) with 35.

And now, the kicking position belongs to Molly, a junior at Franklin Pierce. She made her varsity debut on Friday, Sept. 6 in a 48-20 victory. She made four of six point-after kicks.

This is the first time that three sisters have kicked for an 11-player varsity program. In 2003 and 2004 Mallory and Taylor Chapman kicked for different schools in Michigan.

Molly’s extracurricular activities don’t stop at football. She is also a member of the girls’ basketball and track and field teams. She is the junior class treasurer, plays saxophone in jazz ensemble and helps plan pep assemblies.

While Molly enjoys playing football, she practices year round with the Federal Way Football Club and knows that her future is in soccer.

“I can kick a PAT with my left foot and my right foot,” said Molly. “That’s a useful skill in soccer.”
