Gregory Polanco continues to impress for the Indianapolis Indians. This time it was against the Toledo Mud Hens on Thursday night.
In the Tribe’s 7-5 victory, Polanco was 3-for-4 and was just a triple shy of hitting for the cycle. Thursday night was his 11th multi-hit game of the season.
Tribe starter Adam Wilk pitched six innings – earning a quality start – with six hits and eight strikeouts. He gave up three runs to the Mud Hens, but they were early in the game (first and second inning).
The Mud Hens had a 3-2 lead that lasted not even a half of an inning. In the third, the Tribe tied up the game at three runs a piece and it stayed that way until the ninth inning when the Indians plated four runs.
The Indians had 12 hits on the night with RBIs by Polanco (2), Andrew Lambo, Tony Sanchez (3), and Jaff Decker. Sanchez’s RBIs came on a home run in the ninth to give the Tribe just enough of a lead to win the game following a Mud Hens rally in the ninth.
Jared Hughes, who was brought back to Indy, to allow for Brandon Cumpton to start for the Pittsburgh Pirates in Thursday’s series finale against the Cincinnati Reds, earned the save. Hughes earned the win for the Pirates on Monday night in extra innings.
Vin Mazzaro pitched two perfect innings between Wilk and Hughes – retiring 23 of 26 batters he’s seen so far this season.
The Tribe faces off with the Mud Hens again on Friday night. Jake Brigham is on the mound as the Indians look to win the series.
