The Indianapolis Indians turned to Jay Jackson for a spot start against the Toledo Mud Hens on Wednesday night.
Jackson’s pitching was on-point, but what happened with the Tribe’s offense hasn’t happened this season as they were held scoreless by the Mud Hens in an 0-2 shutout loss.
With Brandon Cumpton being called up to pitch for the Pittsburgh Pirates for the injured Wandy Rodriguez, the Tribe called upon Jackson for his second spot start of the season. The first was on April 8 at Fifth Third Field in Toledo as part of a double header. It was as if he was a different pitcher when he stepped on the mound to start on Wednesday night. His first start lasted only 2.2 innings. Jackson cruised through five innings and only gave up one run – a home run – in the fifth inning.
Andy Oliver who has been impressive when called on from the bullpen. Until Wednesday night, he had pitched six scoreless innings through four separate outings. Oliver pitched the last three innings – giving up a home run in the sixth, walking a single batter and striking out five.
The game was a battle of pitchers: Jackson impressed through five, but Mud Hens starter Robbie Ray was just better. Ray lasted 8.1 innings and gave up only four hits to Jaff Decker, Adalberto Santos, Matt Hague and Chase d’Arnaud.
Adam Wilk is expected to pitch for the Tribe on Thursday night. The first pitch is set for 6:30 p.m. The Indians return home on Saturday.
