Indians return home for first of two games against Toledo

The Indianapolis Indians returned home from a 10-game road trip for just two games against the Toledo Mud Hens, starting on Monday night.

The Indians then head back out of the road for two games against the Louisville Bats before returning for 12-games at home in 10 days – thanks to two doubleheaders against the Columbus Clippers.

Prior to Monday night’s 7:05 p.m. start, the Tribe closed out their road trip with two losses to Louisville. Both starters, Jay Jackson on Saturday and Nick Kingham on Sunday, did not earn the loss as both games were lost in the late innings. Jackson and Kingham combined for 11.2 innings with seven hits and no runs while walking four and striking out 11.

But for Indians starter Jake Brigham, his Monday night performance didn’t match up. He only lasted two innings, giving up six runs on nine hits (three home runs) as the Tribe lost 9-1.

The Tribe scored their first run on a home run by Mel Rojas in the third inning. Other than that the Tribe’s bats were pretty silent, as the offense combined for only five hits.

From the bullpen, Tyler Waldron did a nice job in long relief. He gave up three runs (two earned) on seven hits in 5.1 innings of work. Jhonathan Ramos made his home debut in the eighth inning of the game. All Indians’ pitchers combined to give up 17 hits and walk three batters while striking out only two. Mud Hens batters combined for 41 at-bats compared to the Tribe’s 30.

It was a fantastic night for the Mud Hens’ third baseman Mike Hessman, who hit his 259th International League home run, breaking the IL record.

The Tribe will host the Mud Hens for game two starting at 7:05 p.m. on Tuesday night. Adam Wilk is listed as the probable pitcher.

Indians Player of the Game:

Mel Rojas Jr.

Even though, teammate Jose Tabata was 2-for-4 at the plate with a double, while Rojas was 1-for-4, Rojas was the only Indian to score.
