After former Cincinnati Reds’ outfielder Eric Davis threw out the first pitch, the Indianapolis Indians took the field against the Syracuse Chiefs and turned Saturday night into a memorable baseball game.
A three-run ninth inning capped off with a single by Michael Martinez drove in the Tribe’s winning run to put them up 6-5 over the Chiefs.
The Chiefs struck first – scoring a run in the second inning and two more in the fourth. During this time the Tribe offense struggled and only had one hit.
Then in the sixth inning, after Tribe starter Jeff Locke got out of trouble in the top of the inning, the Indians offense came alive to tie the game.
Andrew Lambo doubled in two runs. Lambo was 3-for-4 with two doubles, scoring a run and driving in two on Saturday night. Gregory Polanco was two-steps behind Martinez as they came around to score from first and second base, respectively. He came around to score when on a wild pitch by Chief’s pitcher Manny Delcarmen.
The tie didn’t last long, though as the Chiefs scored two more runs in the top of the seventh. Cody Eppley pitched into trouble – loading the bases with only one out – before he was replaced by Daniel Schlereth. Schlereth gave up a double to the first batter he faced that batted in two runs, but was able to get out of the inning.
Duke Welker relieved Schlereth for the last out of the eighth inning – striking out the first of three batters that would earn a “K” in Welker’s 1.1 inning appearance.
The game got really interesting in the bottom of the ninth, like most walk-off games. It started with a walk to Nevin Ashley, followed by a one-out single by Chase d’Arnaud. The two scored on a double by Jaff Decker, who is barely batting at a .200 average. Martinez, as the next batter, drove Decker home to end the game. Polanco, who was on deck, greeted Decker at home with arms outstretched, while the rest of the Tribe roster rushed the field toward Martinez at first to celebrate the walk-off victory.
