SPRING ARBOR, Mich. ¾ Dr. Paul Patton was the first Communication Convention (COM CON) speaker of the spring semester on Feb. 19 in one of Spring Arbor University’s (SAU) lecture rooms.
COM CON occurs on one Friday almost every month of the semester, often on the same day as the science lectures. COM CON is a chance for communication majors and minors to hear about different aspects of the field.
Patton spoke about how the communication field is more competitive than the people who are looking into professions in the field think.
Patton challenged his audience to ask themselves, “Do I have what it takes?”
Patton talked about humility. Humility is defined as a modest opinion of one’s one importance. As an illustration he told a story about Bruce, a baseball player that made a great catch in the outfield. He was congratulated and said that he did not make the catch, but it was the Lord.
“This is a distorted Biblical view of humility because God would be a better baseball player than Bruce,” Patton said.
Patton who is also involved in the SAU’s drama department related the competition of the communication to auditioning for the lead in a play. “I wish everyone could have the lead,” Patton said. “I’m in this to for myself, I cannot be threatened by the success of others.”
According to Patton, if everyone is aware of the person God created him or her to be then they can find out what they are meant to do.
